Pine Party Climate Change Plan
Climate change is an ever-growing issue in the modern world, the effects of this phenomena is starting to take a toll on many countries across the world. Being surrounded by water we will be among the countries most affected by climate change in the near future.
Pine Party believes that honouring the Paris agreement and leading the world in Climate action is the way to go for New Zealand. We want to create a future which is safe and free from the effects of climate change for our future Kiwis. To do this we need to half our emissions by 2035.
Our future climate change policies are:
1. Withdrawing Government Investment
A large portion of the fossil fuels we emit comes from fossil fuel companies. We will ensure that all companies which promote fossil fuels in their procedures have no funding from the government. By doing this we will discourage corporations to stop using methods which emit fossil fuels.
2. Support for Coastal Communities
With temperatures on the rise, and our ice caps melting even more each year our sea levels are guaranteed to rise. A phenomenon which increases because of this is coastal erosion, and this will put our townships and communities near the shore at risk (Erosion, n.d.). To support our coastal communities, Pine Party plans to provide extra measures and technology in vulnerable places to decelerate the effects. Whilst also we plan to set up houses in the long- term for those who lose their houses to this extreme event.
3. Ban all Single Use Plastic Products
We recognize that plastic pollution is a big problem within New Zealand, and it is increasingly becoming a major environmental issue. New Zealand approximately disposes 252,000 tonnes of plastic waste into its landfills (Recycle.co.nz, 2019). Because of this our policy is to ban the use of all single use plastic products, this includes bags, straws, cutlery, and containers. Instead, we will opt for products which are recyclable.
4. Minimize use of Motor Cars
Pine party has identified that the use of petrol and diesel in cars is one of the biggest contributors to CO2 emissions within New Zealand (New Zealand's Greenhouse Gas Inventory 1990-2020 Snapshot, 2022). There are roughly 3.5 million cars in New Zealand, and 98% of them are running on either petrol or diesel, the vast majority being petrol (The Vehicles of Tomorrow, n.d.). Our policy to combat this is to have 50% of all cars with an EV engine by 2035. We will also make EV cars more affordable so everyone can get it.
